Towards Climate Resilience: Strengthening Solid Waste Management in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.
Background
Dar Es Salaam faces an urgent need for improved solid waste management to address pollution, health hazards, and greenhouse gas emissions exacerbated by rapid urbanization. Generating around 5,000 tonnes of waste daily, with limited collection efficiency, the city’s inadequate infrastructure and waste disposal practices contribute significantly to environmental degradation and climate change. This project aims to collaborate with the Tanzanian government and stakeholders to develop sustainable waste management solutions, including sanitary landfills, waste-to-energy plants, and expanded recycling infrastructure. It emphasizes public-private partnerships, community involvement, and education campaigns to promote waste segregation, recycling, and eco-friendly practices. Through stricter enforcement of waste regulations and inclusive approaches empowering youth and women, the initiative seeks to build climate resilience, improve public health, and foster sustainable development in Dar Es Salaam.
