Strengthening Neonatal Care and Treatment Services in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Background

Neonatal mortality remains a critical challenge in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, where the neonatal mortality rate of 24 per 1,000 live births exceeds global averages. Factors such as limited access to skilled birth attendants, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and a shortage of specialized healthcare workers exacerbate the issue. Despite government initiatives like the Steps for Essential Newborn Care (SENC) and community-based programs, challenges persist due to cultural practices, insufficient resources, and systemic gaps. This project seeks to reduce neonatal mortality by enhancing healthcare workers’ capacity, ensuring access to essential supplies, improving referral systems, and promoting community education and engagement. It integrates digital health solutions to streamline data management and improve neonatal care services. Through a collaborative, data-driven approach, the initiative aims to strengthen healthcare delivery, address systemic barriers, and advance progress toward sustainable development goals.
