Key Intervention Areas

Communicable disease with key focus on HIV prevention care and treatment

Tanzania Health Access and System Strengthening (THASS) prioritizes the prevention, care, and treatment of communicable diseases, with a special focus on combating HIV/AIDS. Recognizing the profound impact of HIV on public health, THASS works to strengthen healthcare systems and expand access to comprehensive HIV services across Tanzania. Through targeted interventions, THASS supports HIV prevention initiatives such as awareness campaigns, community outreach programs, and the promotion of safe practices, including condom use and voluntary medical male circumcision.

In care and treatment, THASS enhances healthcare facilities to deliver antiretroviral therapy (ART), improves early diagnosis through expanded testing and counseling services, and strengthens patient retention in care programs. The organization also works to reduce stigma and discrimination, empowering individuals and communities to seek and sustain care. By training healthcare workers, integrating HIV services into primary care, and collaborating with local and international stakeholders, THASS ensures that HIV prevention, care, and treatment services are accessible, equitable, and impactful. Through these efforts, THASS contributes to Tanzania’s goal of achieving epidemic control and improving the quality of life for individuals living with and affected by HIV.

Non-communicable diseases

Tanzania Health Access and System Strengthening (THASS) is dedicated to addressing the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including providing access to essential surgical and critical care services. Recognizing that NCDs, such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer, pose significant challenges to public health in Tanzania, THASS implements comprehensive strategies to prevent, manage, and treat these conditions. This includes strengthening healthcare systems to deliver integrated care, enhancing the capacity of healthcare workers through specialized training, and improving access to diagnostic tools, medications, and life-saving interventions.

In addition, THASS focuses on expanding access to surgery and critical care by improving infrastructure, equipping facilities with modern tools, and promoting the availability of skilled professionals. Through public awareness campaigns, community engagement, and partnerships with stakeholders, THASS ensures that underserved populations receive timely and equitable care for NCDs, surgery, and critical health needs. By addressing these complex health challenges, THASS contributes to improving health outcomes and reducing the long-term socio-economic impacts of NCDs in Tanzania.

Maternal, Newborn and child health

Tanzania Health Access and System Strengthening (THASS) is deeply committed to improving maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) as a cornerstone of its mission to enhance healthcare access and strengthen health systems. Recognizing the critical importance of the first 1,000 days of life and the health of mothers and children as foundational to sustainable development, THASS implements targeted interventions to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality and improve child health outcomes. Through initiatives such as training healthcare workers in essential newborn care, expanding access to skilled birth attendants, and enhancing emergency obstetric and neonatal services, THASS ensures quality care at every stage of the maternal and child health journey. Additionally, community engagement and education programs empower families with knowledge about prenatal, postnatal, and child health practices. By addressing gaps in healthcare delivery and fostering equitable access to services, THASS strives to create a healthier and brighter future for mothers, newborns, and children across Tanzania.

Health system strengthening

Health System Strengthening (HSS) is at the core of Tanzania Health Access and System Strengthening (THASS)’s mission to improve healthcare delivery and ensure universal health coverage in Tanzania. THASS focuses on building resilient and sustainable health systems that can effectively respond to the diverse health needs of the population, particularly in underserved and remote communities. This includes enhancing the capacity of health workers through training, improving healthcare infrastructure, ensuring the availability of essential medicines and supplies, and strengthening health information systems for better data-driven decision-making. THASS also advocates for policy reforms that promote equitable access to quality care and integrates community engagement to ensure that health systems are responsive and inclusive. By addressing these key areas, THASS works to create a health system that is efficient, accessible, and capable of tackling both current and future public health challenges.

Pharmacy and Supply Chain Management

Tanzania Health Access and System Strengthening (THASS) is committed to improving the efficiency and sustainability of pharmacy and supply chain management within Tanzania’s healthcare system. Recognizing that effective supply chain management is critical to ensuring timely access to essential medicines and medical supplies, THASS focuses on strengthening procurement, distribution, and inventory management systems to prevent shortages and minimize waste. By enhancing the capacity of healthcare facilities and staff, implementing robust monitoring systems, and leveraging technology for better tracking, THASS works to ensure that communities—particularly those in underserved areas—have consistent access to quality pharmaceutical products. Additionally, THASS advocates for policies that promote transparency, accountability, and the integration of innovative solutions in the management of the healthcare supply chain, ultimately improving health outcomes across the country.

Sub Granting for Public, Private & Non-Profit organizations

Tanzania Health Access and System Strengthening (THASS) prioritizes sub-granting as a strategic approach to amplify the impact of public, private, and non-profit organizations in addressing critical health challenges. By providing financial and technical support, THASS enables partner organizations to implement targeted interventions, enhance service delivery, and build capacity within their operational frameworks. This approach fosters collaboration, promotes innovation, and ensures resources are effectively utilized to address community-specific health needs. Through sub-granting, THASS strengthens partnerships, drives sustainable development, and ensures accountability and transparency in achieving shared health outcomes.

Climate change

Tanzania Health Access and System Strengthening (THASS) recognizes the profound impact of climate change on public health and is committed to integrating climate resilience into its healthcare initiatives. Climate change exacerbates health disparities, particularly in vulnerable communities, by increasing the frequency of natural disasters, worsening malnutrition, and promoting the spread of diseases. THASS addresses these challenges by advocating for sustainable healthcare practices, reducing carbon emissions, and ensuring that health systems are equipped to manage the health risks associated with environmental changes. Through targeted interventions, partnerships, and research, THASS works to build climate-resilient health systems that not only protect public health but also contribute to broader climate change mitigation efforts across Tanzania.

By implementing evidence-based strategies, providing training for healthcare workers, and advocating for policies that prioritize health justice, THASS is committed to creating sustainable health systems that are responsive to the needs of the communities they serve, ensuring equitable healthcare for all.
